Nostalgic Gaming Meetup

It would be pretty cool to have a nostalgic gaming meetup where we play old games from the N64, PS1, SNES etc. for an entire weekend until we hate the games so much that the mere sight of them puts us into a fit of rage.

DEFINITIVE PLAN

DATE BEGIN: 9. May 2014, 16:00
DATE END: 11. May 2014, 16:00
LOCATION: Mehrzweckhalle Ramlinsburg
TRANSPORT: See section "Transport" below for details.

THINGS YOU NEED TO BRING WITH YOU
  • Sleeping bag
  • USB gamepads, joysticks, etc.
  • Consoles (N64, Wii, GC, XBox, etc.)

WIFI: NOT SURE YET, I WILL KNOW IN A FEW DAYS

----------------- OLD POST --------------------

Accommodation
  • Wi-Fi (still working out if this exists, most likely it does)
  • Pizzas, Spaghetti, Australian-style toasted sandwiches (cheese&tomato), porridge, and healthy pancakes for breakfast
  • Lots of chips and party snacks, all served on demand.
  • Drinks (Cola, Redbull, Water, Orange juice)

If you have a sleeping bag, make sure to bring it!

Date/Time

Doodle: http://doodle.com/7d9gtxhw7pv8tqsz

Of course, you can come whenever you want within the defined time-frame.

Transport

The bus-stop you need to get to is "Ramlinsburg, Brunnacker".
Map: https://goo.gl/maps/GBJp9

From Basel or Olten: The easiest way to get there from Basel SBB is to get the S3 (Gleis 17) to Lausen. There's a bus that takes you directly from Lausen to Ramlinsburg.
From other places: Try to get to Liestal, and then get an S3 to Lausen, from which you can catch a bus to Ramlinsburg.

ETA: It takes about 30 minutes from Basel SBB.

CAUTION The busses aren't frequent (maybe one every hour). Please check http://www.sbb.ch/home.html first.

Games List

I was thinking the most fun would be:
  • N64
    • Super Smash Bros. 64
    • Mario Kart 64
    • Mario Party (1,2, and 3)
    • Donkey Kong 64
    • Conker's Bad Fur Day

  • SNES
    • Donkey Kong Country (1, 2, and 3)
    • Pokemon?

  • GameCube/Wii
    • Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Smash Bros Brawl
    • Mario Party 7
    • F-Zero GX

Tournament

My idea was to have two major tournaments with the games Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros. 64 at the beginning of each day, and after that, people can chill with the less stressful games for the remainder of the time. It doesn't have to be those games, though, we can go by popular demand.

Hardware
  • 5.1 1000W surround sound.
  • Unfortunately, all games are emulated. My computer is fast enough to support all of the Wii/Gamecube games at full speed, and my laptop can support the N64/SNES games, giving a total of 8 potential slots simultaneously.
  • It would however be awesome if people could actually bring some consoles with them.
  • I can organise a beamer for the mane event(s) (tournament), I have a large TV screen as well, and multiple smaller computer screens lying around if we need more.
  • I only have 3 functional game-pads, if you have one yourself, make sure to bring it.

RE: Nostalgic Gaming Meetup
New Developments

I can't host more than 4 people in my house.

If there are more than 4 people coming over, I can rent a room in the sport-hall for the weekend. They have a room specifically set up for presentations with a beamer and stuff, and it's been used for LAN parties before. It also has a kitchen. Sleeping would have to be done on the floor with a sleeping bag and mattress.

Everyone would just have to chip in to the price (costs about 100/day, total ~250 CHF for everything, so if we're 8 people, that's only ~30 per person).

As to the sarcastic dad, he hates puns, so make sure to make a lot of puns around him. Apparently he wants to be part of the Mario Kart 64 tournament.

Oh yeah, sounds great! I could bring a real N64 with 4 controllers from my sister. She also has a Wii, if anyone is interested. I don't have a great overview of the games, but I think the classics (Super Smash Bros, Goldeneye, Mario Kart, ...) are covered.

I'm a Podcaster! Check out Ponyzit and ZwangsCHast!

RE: Nostalgic Gaming Meetup
So we are officially over 4 people. I will apply myself for sport hall rental.

News: There might be a garden bbq at my house on Saturday.

Quote:I don't know if ze gf will be happy to spend a weekend gaming... XD But well, I can ask her.

Some legit arguments to gain her trust:
  • The games are family oriented and fun for everyone, including her.
  • The village is perfect for short walks and admiring the view, for times where you need a pause.
  • I can supply condoms for free.
  • Is she really going to let an old bald guy (my dad) win in a Mario Kart tournament? I didn't think so.

Change of plans, we're moving the gaming weekend to Keksi's Café instead.

Not really interested in gaming, but I'm in for that:
  • Fast Wi-Fi
  • Pizzas, Spaghetti, Australian-style toasted sandwiches (cheese&tomato), porridge, and healthy pancakes for breakfast
  • Lots of chips and party snacks, all served on demand.
  • Fast Wi-Fi
  • Drinks (Cola, Redbull, Water, Orange juice)
  • One sarcastic dad
  • Did I mention fast Wi-Fi

RE: Nostalgic Gaming Meetup
Final Date

It looks like Fri 23. May is the most preferred date. The other possibility would be on the 9th, but that would suck for Nerdinand because he has to do some shit on the 10th. Traveling to and from Ramlinsburg is no trivial task.

So the final dates are:
Start: Friday, 14/05/23 18:00
End: Sunday, 14/05/25 18:00

Expect prices to be around 30.- per person. Chances are it'll be less. Price-per-person is calculated as follows:
P = t*c/(np*d)
c: total cost
d: accumulated number of days spent for everyone
t: days spent per participant
np: total number of participants

This way, people who stay less pay less.

@People with consoles and controllers - Bring them if you can! Along with controllers and everything. There can never be too much console.

RE: Nostalgic Gaming Meetup
So... uhmm like... you know... I just realised something. The weekend 24th/25th is probably a bad choice since the JAN will be on that date. And I know of at least 3 other people who will go to the JAN (and wrote in this thread). So yeah, we might need to reschedule.
